Beginners Guide to Bondage Collars

Looking into buying a bondage collar? Not quite sure what a collar is? Well don’t you worry, our bondage gear experts here at Loving Joy have created a guide to give you all the information you need to know about bondage collars!

In BDSM, a bondage collar is traditionally a device that is worn around the neck or a submissive or one with slave status in a BDSM relationship. However, the collar can also be another piece of jewellery worn on another part of the body like your ankle or wrist. The collar is given by the dominant person in the relationship, and the person wearing the collar is said to be ‘collared’.

There are many different types of collars, ranging from thick padded ones that are great for long BDSM sessions, or thinner, choker-like collars, that look a bit more stylish and are great to wear out to fetish parties. Bondage collars usually feature D-rings or O-rings which allow for additional bondage gear to be attached, this may be a nipple clamp or a leash.

In a BDSM relationship it is typically the ‘slave’ who would wear a collar. A slave refers to a submissive person who has consensually gives themselves to a ‘master’ in a total power exchange relationship. A master is the dominant in the relationship and will give the sub the collar to tell others that they are already part of a BDSM relationship.

Become a ‘slave’ usually involves negotiating a wide variety of terms, including what the person is willing to give, as well as the agreement and establishment of rules and expectations. Once these have all been finalised there will usually be a signing of the ‘final contract’, that is followed by the meaningful ‘collaring ritual’.

The master / slave training will be an ongoing process, but the initial period will primarily be about the master laying down ground rules and principles, which will lead on to be the core values of the relationship.

During a master slave relationship the submissive needs to accept that they are no longer free, and are in fact owned by another. They will be told how to speak, behave and even think by their dominant. If they do not follow the rules they will be punish, however they may also be rewarded for good behaviour.

The bondage collar serves as showing complete commitment to the dom, and is a pivotal piece of equipment for any master / slave relationship.
